Induction

We are pleased that you have carefully selected to come and study with us, and are delighted to welcome you as a new student at School of Economics and Finance, Queen Mary University of London. Outlined below is important information about the programme and induction together with the provisional timetables for the induction events and pre-sessional.

Programme Details

  • Induction Week begins Monday 19th Sept – Friday 23rd Sept 2016 (Week 0) and continues from Monday 26th Sept – 30th Sept 2016 (Week 1). During this time you will be covering more than a few welcome events, pre-sessional lectures and classes.
    Note: MSc Finance students will follow an alternative pre-sessional programme. Please see timetable section below for further details.
  • Teaching of modules at School of Economics and Finance (SEF) begin Monday 3rd October 2016 (Week 2). The teaching timetable 2016-17 will be made available during induction week.
  • Enrolment is the process of officially registering with the University, and it is compulsory that you do this during your first week at the College. It take place in the Octagon, Queens’ Building. Please refer to enrolment guidelines and remember to bring all necessary documents. SEF enrolment slot is on Wednesday 21st September:
    • Surnames A – I: 15.00pm - 15.45pm
    • Surnames J – R: 15.45pm - 16.30pm
    • Surnames S – Z: 16:30pm - 17.15pm

  • Directions to the campus can be found through the campus map.
  • International / EU Student Welcome Programme is run by the Queen Mary. A full schedule can be found here.
  • Events for all students such as tours of the local area, boat party, London bus tours, please check details of events here:

      There are a range of different events on offer to introduce you to the campus, the local area and London. Tickets for all events can be purchased via our e-shop. Online ticket bookings will close on 15th September. Tickets will be available to purchase from then on at the Information Point, Library Square.

The schools welcome activities will provide you with information about:

  • The pre-sessional maths and stats support lectures and classes
  • Specialised IT facilities in the school
  • Careers support and advice to help you plan your career
  • Information about resources in QMUL Mile End library
  • Help with English and academic writing from The Language Centre (support is available for all students not just international students)
  • QMUL Student Union
  • During week 1 you will be issued with your attendance clicker

Module Selection Advice

Module selection is a complicated process due to the variety of options available and the rules governing the general programme structure and specialist pathways. Please choose your option modules on MySIS (https://mysis.qmul.ac.uk) from Monday 26th September. This will then be approved by your academic advisor. The deadline to choose your option modules is Sunday 9th October 2016. You can find a description of option modules here.

Careers

SEF’s dedicated Career Consultant, will run a session to let you know about the special events, workshops, help and support available for your career planning. These sessions are included in the pre sessional timetable.

Excel

There are special Microsoft Excel sessions that will be conducted. These sessions will give you some insight of how to use macro and formulae for academic purpose. However due to limited space these will run as first come first serve basis. Initial session will run in the morning and repeat session post lunch period. See pre sessional timetable. Below for date and time.

QUMMIF

Queen Mary University of London MSc Investment Fund (QUMMIF) is a student-managed investment fund that currently has responsibility for over £30,000 of investments!

It is one of the only investment clubs of its kind in London, established for postgraduate students interested in obtaining relevant, practical work experience in trading and portfolio analysis.

Pre–Sessional Lecture

Pre-sessional Maths and Statistic classes begin on the Monday 19th September and lasts for two weeks. There is no examination at the end of this period but it will help us to identify students that may require extra support in these areas.

Lectures are led by Dr. Marco de Benedetto and Panagiotis Koutroumpis.

It is very important that you attend the pre-sessional lectures and classes.

Groups

Which group to attend?

1. Check which lecture group you belong to – for example your surname starts with letter “D” you are in lecture group 1.

2. Look at the below table to find out your group for the support classes / tutorial – for example you are in lecture group 2; if your surname starts with letter “Li”, you are in group 2C – Li - Lz.

3. See the Week 0 and Week 1 timetable to check when and where your lecture / class scheduled.

Make sure that attend the correct group so that rooms are not overcrowded. Content of classes follow the preceding lectures.  

The groups for the classes are organised alphabetically by surnames. Groups for classes / tutorials are smaller in size than the lectures:
